What does it mean if seafood is Afishionado Certified?

Our commitment to Afishionado subscribers is to provide you with traceable seafood from sources we know and trust.

We source:

  •  Seafood from fisheries that have healthy stocks and can sustain fishing pressure
  • From aquaculturalists that grow their products sustainably, whether it be our shellfish farmers or finfish farmers.
  • From fisheries that fish in a way that minimizes by-catch and minimizes the destruction of marine ecosystem.

We will:

  • Tell you the story of the fish and shellfish you put on your plate every week and the fisherfolk who put it there.
  • Provide you with 100% traceability from dock to dish.
  • Offer exclusive access to a wide variety of premium quality, sustainable seafood you won’t find in the supermarket

How Does A Subscription Work?

Easy!

  1. Visit our website and choose how much fish or fish and shellfish you want in your share;
  2. Choose your preferred pick up location;
  3. Read the Membership Agreement to ensure you understand what “catch of the week” is all about;
  4. Proceed to the check out to add your selections and payment information;
  5. Receive your weekly newsletter brimming with recipes, stories about the fisherfolk who bring the bounty to you and more.
  6. Collect your “Catch of the Week” every Thursday after 3pm until the pick up location closes.

Can I skip a week?

Yes! If you’d like to SKIP a week log into your account. Look for a blue button that says EDIT (found under your account info on the left side of the screen. EDIT will take you to the next page where you will see an option to SKIP. Please ensure this is done the Sunday BEFORE the Thursday you would like to SKIP by 9:00pm or you will be automatically charged for the upcoming week.

Can I put my subscription on hold for more than one week?

Yes! If you are heading out on vacation and need to put your subscription on hold for more than one week, please email hello@afishionado.ca and we can put your subscription on hold.

Can I cancel my subscription at anytime?

You can cancel your subscription anytime. Simply log in to your account through our website www.afishionado.ca select EDIT which will take you to a page where you can change all of your account information: credit card info, address, pick up location, share type and size and CANCEL your subscription. This must be taken care of by Saturday evening at 9pm in order to cancel the upcoming week’s share.

How much can I expect in each share?

1lb of Fish Only or Fish & Shellfish (~4 portions) – enough for 2 people for 2 meals plus leftovers

2lbs of Fish Only or Fish & Shellfish (~8 portions) – enough for 4 people for 2 meals plus leftovers

How much does it cost to subscribe to catch of the week each month?

I didn’t like the fish I got this week, can I get white fish only?

Nope. Our goal is to bring you variety of seafood in the Catch of the Week program. That means that sometimes you’ll get something unfamiliar, which is part of the adventure of joining a subscription based program! Our weekly newsletter will include loads of recipes and tips about what you can do with your share.

Can I order more fish or shellfish besides ‘Catch of the Week?

Yes! Just visit our online SHOP, choose which items you’d like to order and select “Pick up with Catch of the Week share” or pick up from our warehouse at 2867 Isleville St Fridays between 10-5pm and Saturdays 9:00am-1:00pm.

You don’t have a pick-up location in my neighbourhood or town, why not?

We’re always looking for new partnerships, please feel free to get in touch with us with your suggestions.

What is the difference between fresh and frozen from a nutrient perspective?

In most cases freezing doesn’t reduce the nutritional content of fish. Protein, fat and fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A and D aren’t affected by the freezing process itself. But when you thaw the fish, you can lose some of the water content as the fish thaws. The water can contain some of the water-soluble vitamins and minerals. If you use all the water lost from the fish for cooking, you will retain the vitamins and minerals. Because fresh fish doesn’t lose any of its water content, it won’t lose any vitamins or minerals.

At Afishionado we only source from high quality, OceanWise approved, land-based aquaculture facilities.

Why do you sell products from outside of Nova Scotia?

Fish are migratory species. They need to be managed globally. While we have great stories to celebrate from right here in the Maritimes, we also can celebrate good management practices around the world. That’s while you’ll see things like BC sockeye salmon, albacore tuna and some species from Maine on our product list.

What are the health benefits of eating fish once a week?

Fish is rich in protein and heart-healthy Omega-3 fatty acids. Two servings (about 6 oz or 180 ml) of fish per week is recommended in order to benefit optimally from Omega 3’s. They are important in the role of preventing cancer and decreasing symptoms in conditions such as IBS, arthritis and other autoimmune diseases. Omega 3’s are also important for our mental health in the prevention of depression and Alzheimer’s disease.

Should I be concerned about Mercury levels in fish?

Fish that are generally higher in mercury are older, large fish that have been in the ocean for long periods of time. These fish include fresh tuna, shark, swordfish, marlin, orange roughy and escolar Fish that are not high in mercury and therefore are not of concern include salmon, char, trout, shellfish, crab, shrimp, trout, herring, haddock, Atlantic mackerel, sole and lobster.

What are the benefits of eating fresh fish vs fish oils?

Our body is programmed to take in nutrients efficiently from real food and although supplements are getting better and better they are still not the whole food. Studies seem to suggest that EPA and DHA levels are better absorbed into our cells using fish form rather than fish oil supplement form.  Capsules contain only the two main omega-3 polyunsaturated fats in fish—EPA and DHA. But fish also offers vitamins, minerals, other fats and other substances that may work with the omega-3s to protect the heart and overall health. Yes! It’s very important to gestational health to continue to eat fish.

What does sustainable fish and seafood actually mean?

We define sustainable seafood as: seafood fished or farmed in a manner that can maintain or increase production in the long term, without jeopardizing the health or function of the web of life in our oceans.  According to David Suzuki, “Choosing sustainable seafood is an easy and effective act of consumer power that helps protect our oceans, and sends a strong signal to government and industry leaders that they should do the same.
